Art post: statues + a new edition of BCM

It's no secret that I much more prefer painting at my leisure from photo than doing live model painting, which has to go much, much faster. I really like taking my time, and you can't rush watercolour, so my teacher suggested that I make good use of all those statues I photographed at the Louvre during my October 2018 trip to France, and paint some of those :).

So yeah, no actual real human nudity is involved in this post, but just to be sure, I've put all the pictures behind the cut. And if you want BCM, just scroll all the way down.

Statues at the Louvreschool made me do it

Derwent graphite pencil in B, Kuretake gansai tambi watercolour and bistre on Daler-Rowney watercolour postcard paper.
I had never really learned how to work with bistre, so I decided I was going to start here, with a little bit of shadowing. As you can see from the following piece, I need a hell of a lot more practise O_o.

Derwent graphite pencil in B, bistre and the school's cheap ass watercolour palette from the drugstore on Daler-Rowney watercolour postcard paper.
I actually kinda like that cheap ass palette mind, I've used it a few times since then. I've actually considered going to Kruidvat to see if they have one, but mostly I've considered investing in real watercolours in the shades I like. If only watercolour wasn't so darn expensive!

Derwent graphite pencil in B, ecoline, ecoline brush pens (the yellow and black) on Daler-Rowney watercolour postcard paper.
I am trying to learn how to paint with ecoline, which went remotely better than painting with bister. I had already used ecoline brush pens to wash out like watercolour before (like I did with the yellow), which is alright, but I'm not much fond of actual liquid ecoline. I do like it for hair though, it's definitely good for that. As you can see in my portrait of Heather in a previous art post.

BCM #39 is out for free download!

And now for the latest edition of BCM!

I had actually pre-prepared the art part of this post, and am adding this bit whilst I'm still recovering from a combo of food allergy and the stomach bug one of the tiny plague beares (aka my youngest niece) inflicted on me, so everyone that is waiting for pages: you WILL get them. Just a little later than usual because you know: still sick :(

That said:
We have interviews with GOOD THRU DATE, Mikaru and Amai taiyaki, concert and event reviews, Helcanen returns with travel tales and a Japan travel photo feature. There are pieces on fashion, the return of a column from the past, a makeup tutorial, a Jfashion feature, art by Mikaru and a chance to win autographed instax photos.

Anyway, the new edition is out, and you can grab it for free here! :)
I hope you guys like it! :)
