Hot Buttered Rum
For Halloween, Bert got me a palette from the Too Faced Christmas range: the Hot Buttered Rum palette.
Now that I’ve actually used it enough, I can write about it.
Because no one has any use for a “look, pretty palette, I have no info other than it’s pretty” kind of post.
I can assure you there’s actual info in here.
I have worn the shadows several times now, and two days in Disneyland Paris, where they were on my eyes for a REALLY long time (4AM on the first day and 7AM on the next ‘till 10PM) and they still looked very presentable by the end. The light shades a little more than the brass one. But that is because I have super creasy eyes (from having to squint at everything since I was a kid) so some shadow WILL wear off.
It’s a good formula in my book when only a little wears off, which isn’t even visible as long as I have my eyes open.
So yes, I would absolutely recommend this palette.
The shadows also blend well, and apply easily, which is also something I look at in a palette.
Plus, they don’t cause me irritation and such, which is DEFINITELY top marks in my book.
It claims to be Hot Buttered Rum scented, and it does smell nice, but whether or not is the scent they claim it is, I have no idea as I’ve never had this kind of drink in my life :).
Bert claims it smells nothing like rum, but he’s not had hot buttered rum either, so the jury’s out on that one.
It smells nice, that’s all I care about. Frankly, even though the scents of Too Faced palettes do often make me smile, I wouldn’t mind if they were scent free either. But as far as gimmicks go, there are definitely worse ones.
I know the swatch photo is a bit shoddy, I’ve not got a lot of skin left on my arms to swatch on that isn’t tattooed, and it’s hard to take photos of swatches myself with my DSLR.
Tap off your shadows, because this is Too Faced, and there is kick-back.
These are also not made in Europe (if that’s something you are a stickler about) like their usual stuff, probably to cut costs.
As these are 8 shadows in a tiny travel size palette for around €25.
They’re good quality and in a tin, so they have to cut down on the cost somewhere.
For those wondering, they are bulk made in the USA and then assembled in the Dominican Republic. I’m just glad they didn’t skimp on the formula with this one!
What drew me to this one in the first place, is the colour scheme.
I really do like Too Faced shadows, but my main gripe with them is the abundancy of pinks. Which is a colour that I don’t tend to gravitate towards. Sure, having a good pink or two in your collection comes in handy once or twice a year for a specific look, but I have those pinks in my Chocolate Bon Bons palette, so I really don’t need another one with several shades I won’t use all that often (if at all, because 3 pinks is one thing, 5 or 6 is overkill in my case). But this has NO PINK, huzzah!
Instead it is all nudes, metallic and a mustardy shade.
Definitely everything I need to create looks on a day to day basis (please Too Faced, make this permanent because I can see myself use this up!).
Bert also got me a travel size concealer, because I can’t be trusted to pack regular concealer anymore (although in my defence, I only forgot it once!).
And the mascara came with it for free (in a "buy 2 Too Faced products, get the travel size of the new mascara free" kind of deal).
Now, I have the full size of that concealer, and I’ve been using it for over a year, with no intentions of switching to something else.
It’s exactly my skin tone (I use Snow in the Born this Way Super Coverage concealer) and unless I’m really ill that day it does a commendable job getting rid of my dark under eyes. If I’m not well, nothing safe colour correcting will deal with those (well colour correcting + that concealer).
So yeah, good stuff, would recommend trying it (as in: try to get a sample before investing in a massive bottle of the stuff, because what works for me might not work for you).
The mascara I’ve not tried yet, because I am currently using up a tube of black mascara. And I don’t want to end up having to chuck two half used up ones, I don’t care that they were all free travel sized ones, I won’t be wasting product if I can avoid it :).
I know a lot of people aren't into Too Faced at the moment, because of what Jeffree Star said about them etc, etc. But I don't feel like a repeat of the Glamglow incident, and therefore I've chosen to stick to the brand. If you hate them, or don't like them, that is ABSOLUTELY fine, we'll just agree to disagree on buying from them :).
And remember, one person's holy grail is another person's holy fail, so regardless of what you read online, try things for yourself if you can!
Or if you can't, check the ingredient list (Too Faced is excellent at listing full ingredient lists on their site in my experience) to see if you're not allergic!

Such a cute palette, I love the colours which are perfect for Autumn xoxo
ReplyDeleteMe too! They're really my kind of thing, so I'm glad to own a travel palette with only colours I use :). Plus it's very versatile I find, I can do several looks with just this :).
