Catch-up post: Zeeland trip, day 2

blog header

Our second day in Middelburg was our only full day,
and as nothing would open ‘till 10am we slept in before going down and next doors to St-John for breakfast (if you wonder why we had to go next doors to our hotel for breakfast, check out my first day post where I talk about our hotel).

Zeeuws breakfast

Breakfast was traditional Zeeuws breakfast, with Zeeuwse bollen, a kind of local pastry. Which is super sugary and sweet. Actually, most of the breakfast was sweet stuff, paired with cold cuts. Very, very strange, but as many locals came there to have breakfast, I’m guessing this is legit a thing? I did like it, but it was definitely _not_ something I’d want to have every single day!

As a storm was predicted for the day, and it did look super gray, we had decided to forgo to the beach in Domburg and instead just stay in Middelburg, do some shopping and visit the Zeeuws Museum. I wanted to do our visit feature in BCM on Middelburg anyway, so that all worked out.

Middelburg

I did go to H&M to buy a cardigan, because I was quite chilly in my t-shirt. I did bring my UNIQLO coat, but the problem is that because it’s essentially a tent, it looks RIDICULOUS when it’s not raining. At least on my usual style it does, it wouldn’t if it was paired with darker colours and a longer skirt or pants. But with what I was wearing, no no no, not whilst it was dry!

Outfit: 9.8.2018

This is what I wore, sans coat though. And before cardigan shopping. I also got a Princess Leia t-shirt, because it was cool and only €9,99.

There was a market going on, so we had a look through that first before wandering off into town.

Indistrieel B

Because Indistrieel was closed the previous day, when we found it, we went back and the kind owned said we could totally take photos for a piece in Neverwas Magazine. Which you can find here. And which has more photos of all the steampunk goodness. I definitely will get a lamp from there at some point! We had only just sat down for a drink at a local café when the downpour started, so at that point I was very glad that I had my giant coat with me!

Zeeuws Museum

And my waterproof camera, because in the face of rain, my trusty Canon Powershot D20, better known as Blub, never lets me down. Well, the photo quality is far from amazing, but at least I can still take photos!

First we visited the abbey, and decided against climbing the tower, Lange Jan (Long John, so called for it is tall). The rain did not stop me from taking some pictures in the abbey garden.

When it rains, I wear a raincoat the size of a tent

Proof that once it rains, I turn into a tent.

Afterwards we went to the Zeeuws Museum, which was really cool. I wrote a piece about it on Neverwas Magazine, which you can read here. It’s properly divided over 4 floors. The top one with all the curiousity cabinets was definitely my favourite. One day, I will turn a whole room into one, you just wait! Bert claims it’s an excuse for me to gather around more useless junk, but YOU JUST WAIT! IT WILL BE AWESOME *ahem*.

lunch at Likkepot

Lunch was had at a place the next square over called Likkepot. They specialised in typically Dutch and local dishes with organic and locally sourced food. Which was a huge thing all over Middelburg and I love it. Bert had a soup, and I had a tostie. Which is basically the Dutch’ version of a croque monsieur. They put seaweed in the salad that came with it, and it was very delicious! I need to see if I can find some here!

The décor was really nice too!

Octopus in a cup

It was pretty easy to resist, at €20 for a small sized mug. Overpriced much!

Stegosheen

We also had a gander at the stuff at De Drvkkerij (not a typo btw, for the Dutch speakers amongst my readers, the u really is a v). I got a Pusheen blind box, and the dinosaur Pusheen,

Middelburg

but forwent the bike bell, because it didn’t seem like it was that good a quality and it was actually not a system that would work well on my cargo bike. So yeah. I’m still thinking about installing a MEGA LOUD horn on it though, if that doesn’t get the idiot locals off the bike path (pedestrians on the bike path, it is legit an issue here), I don’t know what will! Other than starting to crash into them, which is just not an option really, tempting as it always is at the time.

tiny raspberry pie

But yeah, we got more delicious things at Albert Heijn supermarket. I can’t remember what else I had, but these tiny raspberry pies were delicious! I remember that I also got a pack of strawberry cheesecake Oreas, because whilst I am always quick to protest Monsanto/Bayer brands, I am weak when faced with strawberry cheesecake Oreos *hangs head in shame*.

That concludes our second day in Middelburg. It was really good to get a room we could properly lounge in. Because Middelburg is mostly a sightseeing kind of town, meaning that you need somewhere cozy and comfy to spend your evenings. When we go on a city trip where we are out literally to the point where we essentially just have a room to shower and sleep (of course there’s more to personal hygiene, but you get the point), we just get an Ibis, but now we wanted something nicer, and ‘t Oude Bierhuys definitely provided that.

Day 1 of our trip is here
And all photos are here
